Malta past and present
The Maltese archipelago consists of three main islands: Malta, Gozo
and Comino with a total surface area of 316km2.
Malta was exposed to a diversity of cultures, enhancing its rich archaeological,
historical and cultural heritage. The relaxed and inexpensive lifestyle
of Malta, its incredible climate and beautiful sea, make it an ideal destination
for language learning. The local people speak Maltese. However, most
are also fluent in English, a legacy of British rule which lasted 160 years.
Malta obtained its independence from Britain in 1964 and became a Republic
in 1974. The Constitution of Malta guarantees freedom of worship and association.
